Feature Preview: Medical Cure Research

Feature Preview: Medical Cure Research

A new way to spend your fortune on something bigger than another factory: your company can now fund the search for cures to the world's diseases. When your scientists finally achieve a breakthrough, the cure is given freely to hospitals everywhere — raising public health in every city on the map and earning your company a big boost to Corporate Philanthropy (plus a front-page newspaper headline).

Please visit this web page for the full details: https://www.capitalismlab.com/medical-cure-research/

What it does
  • Disease cures are a new branch of research, carried out in your ordinary R&D Center — no special building required.
  • Each cure is developed by raising its tech level over many years. When that level reaches the goal of 500, you get the breakthrough.
  • A breakthrough does three things at once:
    1. Corporate Philanthropy — a big one-time boost to your company's CP score.
    2. City Health — the cure is shared to hospitals worldwide, permanently raising the health rating in every city, not just yours.
    3. News — a front-page "Cure for <disease> Discovered!" headline.
  • A cure is public domain: once any company discovers it, the whole world benefits and it drops off everyone's research list. No point curing it twice.

How to research a cure
  1. Open an R&D Center and create a research team (an R&D job).
  2. Open the Select Technology window. With the DLC on you'll see two tabs at the top — [Commercial] (ordinary tech) and [Philanthropy] (the disease cures). Click [Philanthropy].
  3. Pick a disease and assign your team. (In talent mode you also hire a Research Team Lead for the project, just like any other research.)
  4. In the "How Long is the Research?" box, pick how long to commit the team — anywhere from 6 months up to 10 years. The longer you commit, the more tech the period adds.
  5. Research proceeds automatically. A bigger, more skilled R&D team develops the cure faster — but a cure is a major, multi-year undertaking, so expect a serious commitment for each one.
Reading the "How Long is the Research?" box — two lines tell you exactly where a period will leave you:
  • Tech Level: current + advancement = resulting — the cure's current tech level, plus what the highlighted duration adds, equals the level you'll reach when that period ends.
  • Tech Goal: 500 — the level a cure must hit to be discovered. One period usually isn't enough, so you'll set consecutive periods over many years, watching the Tech Level climb toward the goal. The breakthrough fires the moment it reaches 500.

The cure tree
There are 30 cures in 10 disease families. Each family is a short chain of three — root → middle → leaf — and you must cure the earlier disease before the next unlocks. Because cures are public domain, any company's breakthrough unlocks the next step for everyone. The 10 root cures are open from the very start, and deeper cures are worth more — both the Philanthropy reward and the City Health bonus rise from root to leaf.

Code: Select all

Family First (root) Then Finally (leaf)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Respiratory Cystic Fibrosis Asthma Pneumonia
Oncology (Solid Tumors) Glioblastoma Pancreatic Cancer Lung Cancer
Blood & Breast Sickle Cell Anemia Leukemia Breast Cancer
Neurodegenerative ALS (Motor Neuron) Parkinson's Disease Alzheimer's Disease
Neurological Huntington's Disease Multiple Sclerosis Epilepsy
Cardiovascular Hypertension Stroke Coronary Heart Disease
Renal & Metabolic Macular Degeneration Chronic Kidney Disease Type 2 Diabetes
Endocrine & Autoimmune Muscular Dystrophy Rheumatoid Arthritis Type 1 Diabetes
Viral Infections Dengue Fever Hepatitis HIV / AIDS
Epidemic Infections Universal Influenza Tuberculosis Malaria
Rewards

Code: Select all

Position in family Corporate Philanthropy City Health bonus (every city)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Root (1st) +30 small
Middle (2nd) +35 moderate
Leaf (3rd) +40 largest
The City Health bonus is added to the hospital-driven health rating in all cities and is permanent — it helps under-served cities the most, and the effect stacks as you complete more cures. (Exact reward numbers may be tuned in a future update.)

Seeing the health effect — on the Cities → Quality of Life page, the Health rating now splits into two indented sub-lines that add up to it: Health - Hospitals (the city's own hospitals) and Health - Medical Cures (cures discovered anywhere in the world — the same in every city, and permanent). As more cures are found, that second line rises in every city at once.

Why Corporate Philanthropy matters
Corporate Philanthropy is more than a scoreboard — a company with a strong CP score is simply a better company to work for and buy from. It raises talent loyalty (your best people are harder to poach), lifts corporate brand awareness in every city, and improves how executives feel about you, so top candidates accept lower salaries. Contributions are permanent and never decay, but there is a Time Bonus that rewards giving early — the same donation is worth several times more in your first decade than late in the game.

You can follow all of it in Corporate Details → Rankings and Phil. → [Corporate Philanthropy]: every contribution you've ever made, what earned it, and a How It Helps page showing exactly how much of each bonus you're currently getting.

Cures are only one of several ways to earn CP (civic building donations, community engagement and the Affordable Housing Program are the others). We'll post a full article on Corporate Philanthropy shortly covering all of them in detail.

Racing rivals
AI companies research cures too, but the competition is friendly by design:
  • No wasted effort against the AI. An AI company will never start a cure that someone else is already researching, so a cure you're developing won't be snatched out from under you.
  • You may choose to race. If you deliberately pick a cure an AI is already working on (it's shown highlighted, with a note like "Acme Corp is already researching this cure"), only the first company to the breakthrough gets the reward. The warning lets you pick a different cure instead if you'd rather not gamble.
  • When a rival finishes a cure it's done for everyone: it leaves the list, world health improves, and the next cure in that family unlocks for all companies.
Tips
  • Start with the roots. All 10 are open immediately; clearing one unlocks its family.
  • Chase the leaves. Lung Cancer, Alzheimer's, Breast Cancer, HIV/AIDS, Malaria and the other leaf cures pay the most — but you must clear the two before them first.
  • Build a strong R&D team. Cures take years; more linked R&D units and a skilled team lead shorten the wait.
  • Let rivals do groundwork. If the AI cures a disease, its successor unlocks for you too — pick up the chain where it helps you most.
  • Watch the newspaper. Every breakthrough, yours or a rival's, is reported, so you can follow the global race.
As always, let us know what you think — including whether the reward numbers feel right. Enjoy curing the world![/list]

This is probably the best feature I have seen so far. Rewarding corporate philanthropy and increasing the city health.

One thing I would suggest is perhaps having a difficulty toggle 'AI can research cure that player is already researching' (default is off). That way it could pose a challenge for some players.

"Corporate Philanthropy" should also influence mayoral elections.
A person with a better public image should naturally rank higher than others in the mayoral race.

i find this feature kind of silly though, the majority of billionaires give away very little of there wealth - google suggests 40% of billionaires have given less than 1% of their fortunes to charitable causes with only 3% giving away a significant amount of wealth so this feature is the opposite of a billionaire life.

It is just a game.
