It can be like car body components, with multiple stages, and allow a lot of intermedium manufacturers to form an ecosystem. Like a finished product is

Old PC Desktop from 80s = CRT monitors + I/O devices + main host, and disks (storage) is separated retailed (like camera and old films)
While its main host = mother board + CPU + Memory

For next Desktop of 90s = CRT + speakers + main_case, and I/O devices and newer CD/DVD storage retailed separately.
main_case = CPU + internal storage + main_board
main_board = mother_board + memory + PCI_cards (multimedia mostly define this era)

For Desktop beyond 2000s = LCD + main_case + multimedia devices (I/O + speakers + like USB, etc I remember having a lot of wires in this era)
the components could be the same only PCI_cards becomes complex components with network_cards, video_cards, CD/DVD R/W drives, and internal storage can be newer harddrive.
While this is an interesting suggestion, from the point of view of implementation, it may not be practical as a product must be defined to use a specific set of components for its production. In the above example, there will be 3 different ways to manufacturing the same product type (desktop computer), which is not possible in the game.

Do you have any other suggestions that adheres to the current game mechanics?
Just use 3 different names for the 3 different desktops (like desktop, multimedia desktop, modern desktop, even modding can design many types, or even group them into independent class, and expand the computer class into megaclass with portable, servers, home-computing, msc components classes, etc, each with many products). Just make sure each phase out when new type is researched. (like camera, compact, to digital).

For internet related services this is a very complete landscape survey of all companies involved in 2015 and divided into categories (eventhough its more focused on marketing related tech, but still quite complete)

This sounds like a good solution.

Would you be interested in creating a MOD based on your ideas?

1) We have just announced a new feature for the Digital Age at http://www.capitalismlab.com/forum/view ... =42&t=3731

2) Here is another feature that ties a product with a specific input item (e.g. desktop computers are tied to LCD monitors) : http://www.capitalismlab.com/forum/view ... 442#p16442

Do you think your can use this new feature to take your idea even further to define multiple product lines from different computer vendors?

Also a very big emerging market is cloud services. I am focusing / specializing on this segment currently in school.

David, how in depth are you wanting to go with the Digital Age DLC? Are you wanting to move beyond the standard chip & mortar production of computers & peripheral devices?

I don't know much about modding though, and I have no idea what's the quantity from materials to products. However, I'll try to find as many components and think of a reasonable way to tie them together.

I don't quite get how the new feature grouping works, is it a modding feature, or we can define them like product customization in game?
