Do multiple stores help with market share?

Does the store have a concept of coverage area so as to have multiple stores in a city selling the same product help with market share? That is, even if I set up a store with highest level sales unit in a high population density area, the store is still not be able to cover the entire city?
I'm confused by this because I noticed that AI build multiple same stores in a city and they have a larger market share than I have. But when I did the same thing and set the pricing strategy to maximize market share, I didn't see a significant increase in my market share.
