I've noticed in late-stage games that I rarely look at the actually cities but rather make most of my game moves through the menus. I've also noticed at later stages in a game the game speed slows down drastically and it's helped by hovering over to the corner of a map. I think a setting that allows you to switch off the map and just have a full screen of the menus would be a nice handy feature.

Actually the map graphics are not being actively updated when you open an interface like the firm detail window or any of the reports from the Information Center.

The game speed slows down when there are numerous things for the CPU to process. As the AI builds more firms, it inevitably takes longer to process them.

Thus reducing the number of cities and the number of AI companies will allow the game to run faster.
