The 10 Real Cities script

Post by Esoteric Rogue »

I'm happy with the results of methodically defining 10 cities. There's a lot of diversity. My methodology is detailed on my blog, but here are the highlights:

Started with nation GDP and scaled the populations of most populous city per nation. Real wage rate (RWR) is derived from GDP. To sort the cities, I use a simple purchasing power ranking equal to population times RWR. The number of industrial ports are based on manufacturing output, and consumer ports based on the remainder of total (import + export) trade.

Code: Select all

Power City Population RWR C I
100.0% Shanghai 5,000,000 83 4 3
 43.6% New York City 1,819,734 100 3 4
 32.2% Mumbai 3,009,792 45 1 0
 30.3% Tokyo 2,870,001 44 1 2
 20.1% Moscow 2,505,674 33 1 0
 19.3% Sao Paulo 2,465,093 33 0 0
 14.1% London 1,813,598 32 2 0
  6.4% Berlin 727,115 37 4 1
  4.2% Rome 585,560 30 1 0
  3.8% Paris 500,000 32 2 0
  • Shanghai has a bastion of customers for all your selling needs.
  • New York City has the highest wage.
  • Tokyo's industrial imports should help kick off the #3 manufacturer.
  • Berlin has a lot of consumer goods ports, but not much of a population. Its industrial port could be significant.
  • Sao Paulo has the honor of having no seaports, but it's nice population should make it a fine market.
Anyway, if you like, here's the short code:

Code: Select all

I'm not back; but I always keep one eye open!

Was surprised -- and pleased -- that Cap shared me on Facebook, so I said, oh dang, I better fix that bugfix from 3 weeks ago before another 30 people download it!

Nice! On the script that I'm working on, I'm not happy with the cities I chose as it's making my scenario too easy. Seeing the RWR and # of industrial seaports (as well as your methodology) in your list makes me think that you might be onto something. I'm going to yank it and try it out!
