The profits of my retail store is negative; am I miss anything?

I just passed tutorial eight. My strategy is to start research early on body care products and I achieved dominance in this category and then later I expanded it to the other cities. I also borrowed lots of money and bought lots of stock at the very beginning of the game on day one. I also acquire any media firm as soon as I can. Upon goal completion of tutorial eight, I realised that the main contribution actually comes from my media firm, and my retail profit is negative, and the factory profit is also much lower than my competitors (who got decent positive profit for both factory and retail shops). Am I miss anything critical? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Note: my version is 9.0.23 release. (On the new release page, it says save games older than v9.1.00 are not compatible with this new version, so you may not able to open it if you are using the new version.. Help from anyone who happen to be playing the old version are really appreciated, and I'll update to the new version today as well.)

I see.. I didn't realise there is a new version. It doesn't show up in the official site when I first install it several days ago.
Unluckily, It says 'Please note that save games older than v9.1.00 are not compatible with this new version. '
